The aftbody, which will remain on the martian surface to relay data back to earth, is designed to operate at temperatures which range from 0 to -80 C (32 F to -112 F). Earth's coldest environment, Antarctica, is comparatively balmy, with an average temperature of about -57 C (-70 F). The aftbody weighs about 1.7 kg (3.8 lbs) and includes
