Slide 17

Deep Space 2's twin microprobes smash into Mars at 80,000 G's, and separate into two parts while penetrating the ground. Their cutting-edge miniature instruments and systems will be tested to see if they work under the harsh conditions. Developed by NASA's New Millennium Program, an advanced-technology development program, the microprobes will also conduct experiments to test for the presence of water ice in the soil. (P-50616)
