Surveyor 3 Lander

surveyor3_icon.gif

Only Surveyors 1 and 2 carried descent imaging systems, and of these only Surveyor 1 landed safely on the Moon. No descent images were returned to Earth from Surveyor 1.

To give some idea what the Surveyor landers looked like, this picture shows one of the Surveyors that did not carry a descent camera---Surveyor 3. It landed in the Oceanus Procellarum region of the Moon on April 20, 1967. This picture was taken on November 20, 1969, during a visit by the crew of Apollo 12, Pete Conrad and Alan Bean. The Apollo 12 Lunar Module is visible in the background. This is NASA photo AS12-48-7133.
